Description

An attached three-bay two-storey Georgian house built around 1820, located east of Shore Road in Greenisland. The building has been remodelled around 1890 and subsequently divided into two apartments with alterations to its original plan form. While much of the character and detailing has been retained, there have been too many alterations to warrant listing.

The house is rectangular on plan with two returns to the north: a single-storey return shared with the adjoining building, and a two-storey return to the right. The roofs are pitched natural slate with blue and black clay ridge tiles. Two rendered chimneys retain their original pots, and plain detailed bargeboards sit on moulded brackets.

The walling is ruled-and-lined rendered work over a smooth banded plinth. Windows are square-headed 1/1 timber sliding sash with masonry cills, except where otherwise noted. The principal elevation faces south and is symmetrical, arranged about a central porch. Full-height hipped canted bays project to the left and right. Each face of the canted bays has a window at ground and first floor, though those at first floor are replacement uPVC.

The original timber six-panelled raised-and-fielded entrance door has original sidelights and lanterns, and is surmounted by a sunburst fanlight recessed within an elliptical-headed opening. It is accessed by original masonry steps. A west gable is abutted by concrete steps leading to a door at first floor, now accessing the ground floor apartment. The exposed ground floor section has two windows, with that to the right enclosed by stair access. The exposed first floor section has a replacement door to the centre and a replacement window to the left. A single window to the centre serves the second floor. Steps are rendered with a ruled-and-lined wall to the outer edge, open to the ground floor and leaving the original window visible.

The north elevation is abutted on the right by a stepped two-storey return with catslide roof. The exposed section contains a single window at ground and first floor. The two-storey return has uPVC windows to each face at ground and first floor, and a door to the left cheek.

Rainwater goods comprise cast-iron ogee profile gutters with round downpipes; uPVC gutters serve the extension.

The building and its setting are enhanced by mature gardens to the north and south, and by an attractive shoreside setting with views over Belfast Lough. The site is bounded to the east by modern railings on recent rubble walling, and to the west by Shore Road behind a rock-faced stone embankment. A stream to the north of the site runs into the sea to the north-east and is accessed by masonry steps from the rear. A single-storey pitched roof random rubble outbuilding stands to the north.

The building first appears in its current form on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857 and is captioned "New Bath" on the third edition map of 1902. The first edition map of 1832 shows a building of similar orientation. Griffith's Valuation records "two bathing lodges, offices and pleasure grounds", each initially valued at £20 and revised to £22. The occupier of both properties was Thomas Johnston, held in fee. The properties were entered as sections A and B, with the occupier of the former revised from Robert to Isabella Johnston in 1896, and the latter from Charlie to Thomas Johnston in 1902. The description changed from "bathing house, offices and land" in 1896 to "house, office and land", suggesting a conversion to residential use from that date. By 1922 one property is recorded as vacant.
