Description

This is a detached bathing house, built around 1800, situated on the Seapark estate to the south-east of Seapark House (listed separately as HB22/07/011A). The building is notable for its well-detailed stonework and positive contribution to the estate’s seaside landscape. It possesses rarity value and group value, recognized in conjunction with the listed gatelodge (HB22/07/011B) and boathouse (HB22/07/011D) on the estate.

The bathing house is circular in plan. It features a flat roof, not visible in detail, concealed behind a crenellated parapet. The walls are constructed of roughly coursed rubble stone, with a projecting string course above the window and door openings. The windows are pointed-arch-headed, with rubble voussoirs forming the arches. Openings are present on the north, east, and south sides, while a pointed-arch-headed entrance is located on the west side; a vertically sheeted timber door is set within, featuring a solid transom and rubble voussoirs above. A stonemason’s mark is visible on the south side of the bathing house. The building stands on a rocky outcrop within the Seapark estate, overlooking Belfast Lough. The boathouse (HB22/07/011D) is immediately to the north.

Seapark House itself was built in 1804 and subsequently improved around 1835 and extensively enlarged and remodelled in 1853 by Thomas Jackson. The bathing house appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1832. The estate’s ownership was recorded as belonging to John Owden in the Townland Valuation of 1836. The property is privately owned and has been renumbered as part of a group of listed buildings.
