Description
Magheragall Rectory is a symmetrical detached three-bay two-storey rendered rectory built around 1850, standing on the north side of Ballinderry Road on a slightly elevated, landscaped site. The building is rectangular in plan with a two-storey return to the rear, added around 1900.
The rectory features a hipped natural slate roof with roll moulded clay ridge tiles and rolled lead ridges to the hips. A pair of yellow brick chimney stacks with cast-iron guttering runs to overhanging eaves supported by paired timber brackets and cast-iron downpipes. The walls are ruled and lined cement rendered with a projecting render plinth course and rusticated rendered quoins. All window openings are square-headed with concrete sills and timber sash windows.
The symmetrical south-facing front elevation displays three bays across two storeys. The first floor contains 3/6 timber sash windows, while the ground floor has replacement 6/6 timber sash windows with Roman cement Tudor-style hood mouldings. A central square-headed door opening features a plain Doric rendered surround with entablature and a flat-panelled timber door with rectangular overlight, accessed via two concrete steps.
The west side elevation incorporates a three-sided canted bay to the ground floor with a hipped slate roof, multi-pane timber French doors and multi-pane sidelights opening onto a flight of concrete steps to the garden. Above this, two first-floor windows align with the bay. The western return elevation is three windows wide with replacement 3/6 timber sash windows. The rear elevation presents a central stairhall projection with a 6/6 timber sash window to the half-landing. The east return elevation contains replacement 3/6 timber sash windows and a timber panelled door opening onto the rear yard. The east side elevation is two windows wide with windows matching the front elevation pattern, featuring cylinder glass.
The rectory appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857 as a large square building with one large and three smaller outbuildings to its east. In 1859, Griffith's Valuation recorded it as a house, office and land valued at £26, occupied by Reverend Maurice McKay and let by the Marquis of Hertford. Between 1863 and 1866, Reverend Edward Mockler became the new occupant, residing there until 1895. Reverend Robert Walker then took possession in 1895, remaining until at least 1923. The two-storey extension was added to the north side during Walker's occupancy, appearing on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1900–1901. By this time, two of the original outbuildings had been removed. The 1901 Census records Walker, born around 1860 and incumbent of Magheragall Parish Church, residing in the rectory with his wife Leonora Jane Walker, three children, and a servant. The remaining outbuildings served as a stable, coach house, harness room, barn, potato house and shed. These were demolished around 2005 and replaced with an enclosed yard.
Refurbishments over the years have removed much original interior fabric, though replacements to the exterior have been sympathetic, retaining the well-proportioned original composition and appearance. The original interior layout remains unchanged since the addition of the rear return around 1900. The rectory was listed in 1985, with interior renovations carried out in 1991.
The setting comprises a slightly elevated site on the north side of Ballinderry Road with mature landscaped grounds and a walled yard to the northeast, formerly occupied by rubblestone outbuildings. A bitmac front area and curved bitmac driveway opens onto the road to the southeast via a pair of wrought-iron gates on rendered piers.
The rectory forms an important component of the local landscape and holds group value with the nearby Magheragall Parish Church, forming a focal point for the rural community. It has served as the home of the incumbent minister of Magheragall Parish Church since the 1850s and continues to be occupied by the current Rector. The listing extent includes the house, gates and rubble walling.
