St Andrew's Well, Belfast Road, Ballynahinch, Co Down

St Andrew's Well, situated on the east side of the Belfast to Ballynahinch road, just north of St Andrew's Church, is a utilitarian reinforced concrete structure associated with Belfast’s initial water supply from the Mournes. Constructed by the Belfast City & District Water Commissioners in 1901, it provides access to a valve within the Mourne conduit, facilitating the drawing of water to a nearby covered well and allowing for water pressure equalization and aeration. The structure is square in plan with a flat roof and a metal entrance door at the north end of the east wall. It features openings with metal bars on both east walls, along with a small ventilator in each of the remaining walls. While similar structures exist along the pipeline, most function solely as air wells. The well is of industrial archaeological interest due to its connection to the early Belfast water system.
