Description
Killaney Presbyterian Church is a double-height former Presbyterian Church, now used as a hall, dated 1846. It is located on the south side of Church Road, Boardmills, and stands within a large cemetery site.
The building is rectangular in plan with an attached single-storey extension at the south gable. The main structure features a pitched natural slate roof with blue and black clay ridge tiles and a chimney at the south gable; the gutters are replacement uPVC. The walling is roughcast rendered with rendered projecting stepped quoins, while the gable elevations are ruled-and-lined render.
The principal entrance faces north on the gable elevation and is symmetrical. It comprises a central entrance with moulded pilasters supporting a moulded architrave over a segmental-headed opening containing timber panelled double-leaf doors and a leaded stained glass fanlight, accessed by a single masonry step. The first floor contains two diminished windows with moulded hoodmoulds and labelstops. Windows throughout are stained glass leaded lights with bottom-hung openings in chamfered stone reveals with round-arched heads, projecting masonry sills, and secondary glazing; these were installed in 1961. The east and west elevations are each four windows wide. Windows in the single-storey extension are replacement timber-framed mock lattice casements.
The south gable is abutted by the single-storey extension, which has a natural slate roof, replacement uPVC rainwater goods, and ruled-and-lined smooth render. A further timber-constructed store with a felt flat roof extends at the east.
The cemetery site is accessed from the north via splayed boundary walls, a galvanised gate, and an early pedestrian entrance directly in front of the principal entrance, terminating at the road edge with square piers supporting pyramidal caps and double-leaf cast-iron gates. The graveyard contains grave markers dating from the late 19th century. A large pedimented grave marker adjacent to the original pedestrian entrance, dated 1868, is dedicated to William Martin, who died in June 1865.
The church was built following a Presbyterian secession in 1840, when members of the First Boardmills congregation objected to the congregation joining the General Assembly. After mediation by Revs Dr Henry Cooke and Dr R Stewart and Lord Downshire, the seceders received £350 to resign their claims to the original meeting house, and this money funded the construction of the present church, which opened in 1846. The congregation became known as Killaney. In 1925, Killaney was received into the General Assembly and united with Second Boardmills. In 1974, First and Second Boardmills and Killaney came together under Rev George Simpson. In 2002, all three congregations were amalgamated into Trinity Presbyterian Church, Boardmills, which now worships in the former First Presbyterian church. The present building is no longer in regular use.
In the 1950s, repairs and alterations were carried out, including replacement of all windows. In the 1960s, a new minister's room and choir room were added. Despite retaining its original plan form and main façade characteristics, the building lacks original internal detailing and is not considered of special architectural or historical interest.
