Description

This is a single-storey, four-bay thatched house, originally comprising two dwelling units, built between 1820 and 1839. It forms one unit of a south-facing pair located beside the Hillhall Road, approximately one mile from Lisburn, travelling towards Belfast, and is statutorily listed. The terrace is significant due to its transition from a rural setting, once surrounded by other thatched buildings on the opposite side of the road, to an urban context.

The house has a thatched covering contained within a plain parapet gable on the west side, which abuts the wall of the adjacent house, number 117. Plain chimney stacks rise from either end of the building and above the original central hearth position. The walls are rendered white above a black base. A low, modern red brick wall, set back from the thatched house, forms a boundary with the adjoining property. The front elevation features, from west to east, two 6/3 vertically sliding windows, a timber sheeted door, a 6/3 window, a timber sheeted door, and a final 6/3 window, with sills of traditional depth. The west gable is blank. A large, modern flat-roofed extension is at the rear, and the three windows facing the front are modern.

The building, along with its neighbour, number 117, is shown as part of a terrace on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map, which also depicts thatched buildings on the opposite side of the road. The 1858 Ordnance Survey map shows the area named “Trumbleshighway” and described as “Oldturnpike”. Much of the original roof timberwork remains, despite strengthening work undertaken over time.
