Description

McFarland Arnold & Co. Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditors occupies a Grade B2 listed building on the north side of Main Street in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone. The structure is an attached asymmetrical three-bay three-storey rendered former constabulary barracks, built around 1860 and remodelled in 1905 as a post office, then remodelled again around 2000 as an office.

The building is rectangular on plan, facing south. The pitched roof is laid with fibre cement slate and features blue-black angled ridge tiles. A polychrome brick chimneystack is shared with the adjoining building to the west gable, while rendered chimneystacks rise from the east gable, both fitted with replacement terracotta chimneypots. Half-round painted cast-iron gutters run around the building.

The walling throughout is painted smooth rendered. Windows are square-headed painted timber 1/1 sashes with painted rendered sills. The principal south elevation is asymmetrical, with rendered quoins at the right end. Ground floor windows are fitted with mild steel sill-guard rails. A central square-headed painted timber four-panelled door with plate glass overlight above the lock-rail provides the main entrance, though a modern sign fascia now obscures the ground floor. The first and second floors each contain two windows; the right bay is extended with a single window to each floor. Second floor windows are headed with segmental arches.

The west elevation is entirely abutted by 6 Main Street. The rear north elevation is abutted by an extension and displays roughcast walling with various replacement square-headed uPVC casements; the ground floor has a metal window grille. The east gable is blank.

Historically, the building appears on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map. Griffith's Valuation and associated town plan (1856–64) identify it as a police barrack leased from Humphrey White, with dimensions recorded as house 30×24.6×19 feet, an addition of 10×14×7 feet, and two offices, valued at £10 0s 8d total. Annual revision records note the barrack was being improved in 1862, with its value raised to £13 10s. By 1891 it was no longer in use as a police barrack. A town plan of 1898 captions the building as "White House", presumably referencing the White family association, and shows the post office as occupying the adjacent building. From 1905 it is described as a post office, house and yard valued at £15 10s, with a further 10s for the yard.

The building retains its Victorian style and the front elevation displays good proportions. Despite modernisation and loss of some original interior layout and detailing, the building has group value as part of a terrace of three units on Main Street, set adjacent to the former National School and St. Eugene's Church of Ireland Church, and occupies a prominent location within Newtownstewart Conservation Area.
