Description
6 Main Street, Newtownstewart is an attached two-bay three-storey rendered townhouse, originally built around 1860 and substantially remodelled in 1908. It stands on the north side of Main Street in the town centre and is now in office use.
The building is rectangular on plan, facing south. It has a pitched natural slate roof with blue and black angled ridge tiles. The chimneystack features polychrome brickwork with replacement terracotta chimneypots to each gable, retaining late Victorian detailing. Half-round painted cast-iron gutters run to the eaves.
The walling is painted smooth render. The principal south elevation features square-headed painted timber 1/1 sash windows with painted rendered sills. The ground floor left bay window has a replacement mild steel sill-guard rail. The right bay contains a square-headed painted timber four-panelled door glazed above the lock-rail with a plate glass overlight.
The diminishing windows to the upper floors suggest the building's early 19th-century origins. Despite modernisation and loss of some original interior layout and detailing, the building retains its early style and proportions.
The west elevation is entirely abutted by 4 Main Street. The east elevation is entirely abutted by 8 Main Street. The rear north elevation is inaccessible but features square-headed replacement uPVC casement windows in rendered walling.
The property is situated in the town centre abutted by neighbouring buildings, with St. Eugene's Church of Ireland Church to the southwest. It has significant group value as part of a terrace of three units on Main Street, set adjacent to the former National School and in a prominent location within Newtownstewart Conservation Area.
The building appears on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map and is first clearly mentioned in Griffith's Valuation and associated Town Plan of 1856–64, which gives dimensions as 15.6 by 24.6 by 17 feet and valued it at £2 2s 4d. It was then occupied by Catherine McFarlane and leased from Alexander Aiken, who also owned the adjacent property at number 4. Revisions raised the value to £3 5s, and in 1864 the lessor is recorded as James Glass, who also owned the adjacent property. A marginal note indicates that Glass had gone to Australia and suggested the houses might be finished. The buildings were described as greatly dilapidated in 1901. By 1907 James Arbuckle was the lessor, and in 1908 both this house and number 4 increased dramatically in value to £7 5s and £8 respectively, indicating the substantial remodelling undertaken at that date.
