Description

24 Meenablagh Road is a two structural bay direct entry thatched house dating from the mid-19th century, built between 1840 and 1859. The house faces south-east and stands a field's length from the road at the end of a lane that branches south-west from a T junction with the road between Castlederg and Donegal Town, approximately nine miles away. The house is visible about 300 yards from the junction. A modern replacement dwelling provided by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive has been built on the lane approach.

The walls are harled and painted stone. The roof is thatched and sits between concrete parapets, with each gable rising to a chimneystack topped by a narrow corbelled capping. The entrance is a timber sheeted door protected by a square jambed windbreak porch with a flat concrete roof. On either side of the entrance are vertically sliding windows with sashes divided into two vertically.

An outbuilding abuts the left (south-west) gable, roofed with corrugated iron and terminated by a concrete parapet; its door is timber sheeted. On the opposite gable are the remains of another corrugated iron roofed structure with a timber plank entrance door. The rear elevation has two window openings: one at the north-east end is vertically sliding with plain sashes and chamfered sash stops, while the other, positioned roughly half way along, is plain.

The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833-34 but is not noted in the contemporary valuation. The second valuation of 1858 records the house as occupied by Neil McFergus under the immediate lease of Sir Robert Ferguson, with a rateable value of 10 shillings. A 1992 survey by Colin Hatrick of the Environment and Heritage Service reported that the layout and roof structure were original and in fair condition. In 1994 Michele McFaul advised the Environment and Heritage Service that re-thatching was required. Since then the thatch has deteriorated, though a restoration scheme is contemplated.

The house remains in substantially original state and represents a type of vernacular construction of which only a few examples survive in this part of North Tyrone.
