Description

A detached three-bay single-storey vernacular dwelling built around 1800, located on the north side of Corgary Road in the townland of Ardarver. The building is rectangular on plan with a small windbreak porch to the east. The walls are of rubble stone construction, harled and whitened. The pitched roof is now clad in corrugated metal with raised concrete verges and smooth rendered chimneys topped with clay pots.

The principal elevation faces east. The three bays are arranged as follows: the left bay contains a single window to its left with a windbreak porch to its right, the porch featuring a vertically-sheeted timber half door; bays two and three each contain a single window. The windows are replacement timber-framed 3/6 sliding sash units with exposed sash boxes and painted masonry sills. The south gable is blank. On the west elevation, two timber casement windows sit at the left (the left window has a painted concrete sill), while projecting bays at the right each contain a small timber casement window. The north gable is blank. Cast-iron ogee profile gutters and round downpipes are fitted to the roof edges, with square downpipes to the rear.

The building was originally thatched, though the roof timbers have largely been replaced and the thatch has been superseded by corrugated metal. The dwelling was extended in later years following a typical linear plan form, expanding from two rooms to three. This extension is signified by differing wall thickness at the north end of the building and may correspond with a rise in rental value recorded in the 1860s.

The building is set within a rural site. Remains of a rubble stone boundary wall at the south and west serve as a retaining wall to a mature garden. To the east stands a single-cell rendered stone outbuilding with a corrugated metal roof and painted timber doors, accessed through circular rubble pillars supporting a timber gate. Further circular pillars support a gate to agricultural land at the north. The site frontage to the road at the south is bounded by a timber fence, accessed through circular pillars connected to outer square piers by rubble walling.

Historical records show the building on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 in its current form. Griffith's Valuation of 1858 records it as a "house, offices and land" occupied by Edward Moss (later changed to O'Neill) and leased from James Martin, valued at £0.10s. The occupier changed to Edward Connolly in 1864, when the valuation increased slightly to £0.15s. The building is distinctly vernacular in style with simple construction and materials, representing an important remnant of rural nineteenth-century architecture.
