Description
Detached two-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling built circa 1860, located on the north side of Corgary Road in the townland of Ardarvar. The house has a rectangular plan with a direct entry, a windbreak porch to the north, and a bed outshot to the south.
The principal elevation faces east. The left bay contains a single window; the right bay contains a canted windbreak porch with a cat-slide roof and a replacement timber sheeted door on the left, flanked on the right by a single window. The walls are painted rubble stone. Windows are replacement square-headed timber framed casements with painted masonry sills. The roof is pitched corrugated metal with rendered stone chimneys.
The north gable is abutted by an additional bay acting as a shed, which has double-leaf vertically-sheeted timber doors, and further abutted by a lower byre with a partially rebuilt gable. The west elevation is abutted on the right by the bed outshot, which contains a single 2/2 sliding sash window; the exposed section to the left is blank. The south elevation is blank.
A single-storey gabled rubble stone stable stands to the north-east with vertically-sheeted timber doors in the north gable, which is partially rebuilt. Recent corrugated metal farm buildings occupy the yard to the north. The site is bounded to the road to the north by rubble walling topped with a timber fence, with access through a farm gate.
Historical records show that in Griffith's Valuation (1856–64), Annie and James Gallan occupied houses on the plot valued at 15 shillings and 5 shillings, leased from James Martin. In 1865 the value was amended to £1 3 shillings, likely indicating the construction of a new house on the present site. Patrick Gallin was the occupier in 1876, with various members of the Gallin family occupying the house thereafter. The lessors changed over time: Averell Lloyd held the lease from 1888, and James McClintock held an undated change. In 1899 the valuation was increased to £1 12 shillings, with the valuer noting the house had been improved. At this time the house and outbuildings were entirely of rubble masonry and thatched, with an estimated cost of £65. The valuer's plan and dimensions recorded a dwelling with an outshot, two adjoining outbuildings to the north, and a further separate outbuilding to the east. The northern outbuildings appear to have been rebuilt since this period. By 1933 James Gallen had become the owner in fee under early twentieth-century land purchase legislation. The valuation was then increased to £1 5 shillings and 15 shillings for the outbuildings. The house comprised a kitchen and one room with earth floors and a porch. At this date the house was roofed with corrugated iron, though all outbuildings remained thatched. The house and opposite outbuilding first appear on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1904–05.
The building is recorded only and is not listed, as it lacks its original roof structure and interior, and is therefore considered not to be of sufficient architectural or historical interest for listing, despite its value as a vernacular structure within its landscape setting.
