Description

Troy Hall is a Grade B2 listed building located at 9B Troy Park, Culmore Road, Londonderry. It forms one half of a substantial two-storey, three-bay High Victorian villa constructed in 1897.

The building is executed in red brick with extensive use of terracotta and reconstituted stone or plaster for cills and other decorative details. Natural slate roofs feature rising pinnacles above the gables. The structure represents a well-maintained example of High Victorian villa architecture, with little major alteration.

The east-facing front façade presents three gables to the street. The central gable is notably smaller and recessed to align with the eaves on either side, with a door onto a balcony below and the main entrance door at ground level beneath it. To the north of the central bay, a large projecting gable extends 2 metres from the façade and features a canted bay at ground level. Above this bay sit two two-pane windows surmounted by an elliptical terracotta panel, with an elliptical pediment and ball-topped finials above. To the south, a narrower gable projects 500mm, similarly detailed with two two-pane sashes at ground and first-floor levels—each with a slight curve to the head—and elliptical pediment with ball-topped finials. At the southern corner, a projecting tower is topped by a faceted conical roof, serving as the entrance to the 9B section. This entrance consists of a two-leaf panelled mahogany door with a semicircular fanlight, flanked by pilasters that project forward to support the balcony. Windows on the outer side of the fanlight provide additional light.

The south façade steps towards the rear. A canted-bay gable projecting 500mm from the façade features two two-pane sashes above surmounted by a terracotta panel and similar decorative treatments. The entrance to the 9B section is accessed through a timber glazed porch to the south of this gable.

The west-facing rear façade displays the hipped wings of the two building halves, with the main structure between them falling to a lower roof level. Decoration here is more utilitarian in character. A projecting gable similar to those on the main and south façades appears further to the rear on the northern section. Centrally, a modern door arrangement with a rendered flat roof is located below a large stained-glass window marking the position of the original stair.

The building is situated in mature grounds with a large lawn to the east fronting the main façade. A rockery occupies the southern boundary, whilst a road with planting runs along the northern and western boundaries.

Troy Hall was the only villa completed from a proposed scheme developed by the Honourable the Irish Society during the 1860s in Troy Park. The park's layout was designed by Sir William Tite (1798–1873), the architect of the Royal Exchange in the City of London (1842), the Thames Embankment (1862–70), and Government House Termonbacca for the Irish Society (1846). The house remains in private residential use.
