Description
Semple's Bridge is an early-nineteenth-century humpbacked bridge of random rubble stone construction, built around 1817 on the northern portion of Baronscourt Estate near Newtownstewart. The bridge carries a secondary estate road over a stream and remains in good condition despite some cement repairs.
The bridge consists of two spans with segmental arches formed from rubble voussoirs. The abutments, spandrels and parapets are constructed of random rubble stone, with the parapets featuring soldier coursing. A central pier with shallow cement-rendered cutwaters rests on a central oval island, also of rubble stone construction and now partially obscured by dense vegetation. The grassed embankments frame the bridge, which sits within mature woodland.
The bridge was built as part of the estate improvements undertaken by the seventh Earl in the early nineteenth century. Historical records show that an earlier wooden bridge occupied the same location: Matthew Hood's letter to the Marquis of Abercorn dated 6 May 1797 first mentions "Semple's gate and bridge", and a subsequent letter from October 1802 records that the wooden bridge had broken down and been repaired. Sir John James Burgoyne's correspondence from 1817 confirms that the stone bridge was nearing completion. The bridge appears on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map as "Semples Br". The structure underwent repairs by Lynch & Sons in 1998. The name likely derives from William Semple, a tenant recorded in early nineteenth-century estate correspondence.
