Description
A relatively large, plain three storey gabled warehouse dating from 1903, positioned at the northern end of the east side of Clare Street near Ballycastle town centre. The building has a roughcast façade and is an unremarkable example of its type, though it remains an important part of the backlands of Ballycastle.
The front elevation faces roughly west into Clare Street and is asymmetrical. At ground floor level there are three large square-headed vehicle doorways with timber-sheeted doors, the left hand doorway fitted with a sliding door. Between the left and middle doorways is a small high-level window with a two-pane timber sash-like frame protected by a security grille. Similar windows, but larger, are found across the front elevation. The first floor contains four evenly spaced openings comprising three windows and a timber-sheeted loading door positioned between the second and third windows. The second floor has a comparable arrangement, with the doorway partly set within a small gable and a hoist positioned above. Both main gables are blank, with the south gable displaying the outline of a now-demolished neighbouring building.
The rear elevation's ground floor level is entirely covered by a single storey gabled structure with roughcast façade and corrugated iron roof, its faces appearing blank. Above this, the main building's first floor contains a window to the far left, another small gabled window to the far left, and a further window to the right with a dilapidated Georgian-paned frame. Much of the right-hand side of the first floor could not be examined. The façade is covered in unpainted roughcast with concrete window sills to the front windows. The main roof is slated, while the single storey structure has roof lights along its east side. Recent alterations include PVC rainwater goods.
Historical records indicate the site was occupied from at least 1832, though the 1898 valuation plan—the earliest detailed large-scale plan of Ballycastle—shows three smaller properties on the site, recorded in contemporary valuation books as small dwellings. A valuation entry of 1903 records stores and yard on the site in the name of Alexander McAllister, and as later valuation books show no changes, this store is understood to be the building visible today. In recent years the warehouse has served as an auctioneer's store and later as a furniture shop; it currently houses building materials. The building sits within Ballycastle's conservation area.
