Description

The building at 82 Castle Street, Ballycastle, dates to around 1820 to 1839, likely as a replacement or substantial renovation of an earlier mid-18th century structure. While it has been renovated and is now of limited architectural or historical merit, it occupies a prominent location and contributes positively to the townscape.

It is a four-bay wide, two-and-a-half-story building with a gated alleyway on its upper side. The front elevation to Castle Street is asymmetrical, featuring a central doorway with a fanlight. To the left of the door is a tall, narrow window with two panes, the upper pane being top-hung. A wider, horizontal window is positioned to the right of the door. The first floor has four vertical windows, each with two panes, the upper pane of each being top-hung. A continuous corbel course supports a half-round cast iron gutter with a single downpipe. The walls are smooth rendered and painted, and the roof is covered with natural slates, punctuated by two Velux-style rooflights near the ridge. A chimney stack is located at the gable, which is smooth-rendered, painted, and windowless. A three-metre-high wall, rendered and painted, runs back along the alleyway from the gable. The rendering stops after a short distance, revealing underlying rubble stonework. The rear of the building has no back return and is three bays wide, featuring generally vertical casement windows. A central, flat-roofed dormer provides light to the attic stairs. The rear walls are smooth-rendered and partly painted.

The building was probably rebuilt or renovated in the early 19th century. It has been recently renovated internally and fitted with modern windows externally at the front. The original shopfront was lost in the 1970s. In 1952, the building was owned by P Dallat, who operated as a funeral undertaker and decorator. A 1972 survey described the building as a two-story, four-bay rendered building with a pilastered shopfront and plain sash windows. The building is located within a conservation area.
