Description
Moneycarrie Bridge is a later 19th century, triple-arched masonry bridge located over the Agivey River on Brone Road, near Garvagh, County Londonderry. The bridge is primarily of architectural interest, notable for its high standard of style, proportion, and embellishment, and is enhanced by its unspoiled rural setting.
The bridge carries a narrow, 1½ lane road over the Agivey River via three arches of equal size, each with segmental profiles and sandstone voussoirs. The abutments and piers are constructed from squared and rock-faced rubble basalt, brought to courses and underpinned with concrete. The spandrels and parapets are of quarried random rubble basalt, also brought to courses. Pointed/curved cutwaters, capped with dressed sandstone, rise to arch spring level at either end of the piers, with the sandstone continuing as string courses across the arches. Similar string courses run along the tops of the abutments and around their margined ends. Shallow pilasters rise to the tops of the parapets from the tops of the piers. The bridge incorporates two metal tie bars through the extrados of each arch. A dressed sandstone string course runs at crown level along the base of the parapets, which are coped with projecting, chamfered sandstone blocks and slightly raised above the pier pilasters. The terminal piers are also raised and project outwards in line with the pier pilasters. An indecipherable sandstone plaque is set into the middle of the road face of the upstream (southwest) parapet. Metal bridge name plates are affixed to the downstream east and upstream west ends of the parapets.
Historical maps show a small bridge located upstream of Moneycarrie Bridge in 1832 and 1848–53. The current bridge is shown on the 1904 Ordnance Survey map, superseding the earlier structure. It is therefore of later 19th century date and was likely constructed by the County Londonderry Grand Jury. The bridge’s construction is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest, demonstrating characteristics of age, authenticity, and local interest.
