Description

Brone Park, Ballylagan Road, Agivey

An asymmetrical direct-entry single-storey, three-bay rubblestone dwelling with thatch under corrugated tin roof and associated outbuildings, built circa 1830 and situated via a laneway to the east of Brone Park, northeast of Garvagh.

The dwelling has a rectangular plan with an outshot to the west. The roof comprises partial straw thatch covered by pitched corrugated tin. Plastic rainwater goods are fitted. The walling is random rubblestone with cement render to the east elevation and cement rendered brick to the south gable.

The principal elevation faces east and is four windows wide with the entrance to the left of centre (door missing). Window openings retain remnants of timber and metal frames in plain reveals with projecting concrete sills. An enlarged window opening with remnants of a metal frame is positioned at the far left. The south gable is blank. The west (rear) elevation features an outshot to the right, with two metal-framed window openings; the left bay has a timber-framed window to its centre. The north gable is blank and is partially abutted by the ruin of a former rubblestone byre.

Single-storey rubblestone outbuildings to the north feature corrugated tin roofs. One outbuilding forms a linear group with the house and has a wide opening to the east formed in red brick with a red brick eaves course; internal walls are partially whitewashed. A detached outbuilding further north has cement rendered brick to its southwest corner. The site is enclosed by metal railings to the south.

The building is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1832. A second structure, most likely an outbuilding, was added to the northeast between the second edition (1849–53) and third edition (1904–5). Griffith's Valuation (1856–64) records the building as the residence of Samuel Alexander, a house and offices valued at £1 10s, situated on a farm of over 22 acres leased from George Alexander. The farm passed to the Lynd family in 1876, first to Andrew Lynd, then to his widow Hannah following his death on 22nd November 1882, and subsequently to their son James in 1919. At the 1901 census, widow Hannah Lynd was living at the farm with her two sons and two daughters, one of whom was working as a dressmaker. The five-room, second-class house is recorded as thatched in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The building currently lies derelict.

The building is situated in an unspoiled rural setting to the east side of Brone Park, accessed via an earth lane and surrounded by farmland.
