Description

Ballybritain Bridge is a twin-arched masonry road bridge dating to the later 19th century, built over the Aghadowey River on the Lisnamuck Road, near Aghadowey. It is of primarily architectural interest, noted for its high-quality style, proportions, and embellishments, and enjoys an unspoiled rural setting.

The bridge is constructed from squared random rubble basalt, coursed to the spandrels and abutments. Rounded cutwaters rise to arch spring level at each end of the pier, capped with dressed sandstone that continues through the arches as string courses. Identical string courses run along the tops of the abutments, wrapping around their margined ends. The two spans are of a segmental profile and feature rusticated sandstone voussoirs. A dressed sandstone string course runs across each face at arch crown level. The parapets are coped with chamfered sandstone blocks which oversail the outside faces, and terminate in out-projecting piers. The inside faces of the parapets are ribbon pointed, and metal name plates are affixed at the northwest and southeast ends of the bridge. The deck accommodates 1½ lanes of traffic, and timber stiles at the south end provide access to the upstream and downstream banks.

The site was not marked on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832, but a bridge downstream was noted in the 1848-53 edition. The present Ballybritain Bridge replaced that earlier structure by 1904, indicating its construction in the later 19th century, likely between 1860 and 1879. The bridge is set within a picturesque rural landscape of thinly wooded embankments and surrounding fields, and also possesses some industrial archaeological interest.
