Description
A two-storey brick terrace of eight houses erected in the early 1870s at Cullycapple Park, built to house workers at the nearby bleach mill complex operated by Thomas Barklie & Co. The terrace is aligned approximately north to south, positioned just east of a minor road through the hamlet. For descriptive purposes, the houses are numbered 1 to 8 from north to south.
The terrace features a shared pitched natural slate roof over tied common rafters, now intact only over houses 1 to 3, with the roof collapsed or missing over the remainder. Brick chimneys rise from both gables and from party walls between the houses. The walls are constructed of whitewashed handmade red brick with a projecting brick eaves course. Rainwater goods are missing throughout.
The principal elevation faces west. Each house was originally planned with a direct-entry arrangement typical of vernacular dwellings, comprising a beaded t&g door at the left and a 6/6 sliding sash timber window at the right on the ground floor, with a 3x2-paned timber window at first-floor level directly above. Both windows originally had sandstone cills and flat brick heads. Only the door to house 6 survives in its original form; most other doors have been replaced or are missing. Many original windows remain, though some have been replaced with casements or are lost. Stone cills to houses 1 and 2 have been replaced with concrete. At house 8 at the south end, the ground-floor façade has been rebuilt to accommodate a wide vehicle opening supported by a flat timber lintel, with the wall above now missing.
The north gable is devoid of openings. The rear (east) elevation is heavily overgrown with ivy. The rear elevation retains windows to ground and first floors of each house, variously 2/2, 4/4 and 6/6 timber sashes where they survive. At house 8, the first-floor wall is missing but otherwise remains intact. The south gable has lost its first-floor wall and has no openings at ground level.
The terrace is now in a very derelict condition. It is surrounded by fields to the north, east and south, with another abandoned terrace of houses to the west and an unsurfaced access lane to the south-west connecting to the public road. Extensive views extend to the north and east.
The terrace first appears in the Valuation revision book for 1872, alongside a neighbouring terrace of six houses on the east side of the public road, both belonging to Thomas Barklie & Co. The building is first shown on the 1904 Ordnance Survey 25-inch map and appears on subsequent editions. By the 1973 edition, only the two houses at the north end are numbered, indicating that the other six had become vacant by that time. The inhabitants had moved to a Northern Ireland Housing Executive estate at Clarehill. The northernmost house was the last to be vacated, in the mid-1990s. The terrace is recorded as being of industrial archaeological interest and is currently in private ownership.
