Description

Detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey rendered house built around 1866, with a central entrance porch and a single-storey rendered section to the north gable. This accretion, built around 1920, was originally used as Aghadowey Post Office and is part of the listed structure. The house is L-shaped on plan, facing east, and is set within a low-lying wooded site below the junction of three urban roads.

The building is constructed with ruled-and-lined cement rendered walling and rusticated rendered quoins to either end. The pitched roof is covered with artificial slate and features roll-moulded clay ridge tiles and a pair of rendered profiled chimneystacks at either end with terracotta pots. Cast-iron guttering runs beneath sheeted overhanging eaves, with cast-iron downpipes and timber bargeboards to the gables.

The front elevation comprises three bays with square-headed window openings, each with moulded architrave surrounds and keystones. The windows are set on concrete sills supported by corbels and are mostly original two-over-two timber sash windows. The symmetrical front is dominated by a square-plan flat-roofed entrance porch with a deep moulded parapet cornice and a square-headed door opening to the south, featuring an original four-panelled timber door with bolection mouldings and opening onto a concrete step to gravel forecourt.

The south gable has a single off-centre window opening to the ground floor and is abutted by a wraparound timber-frame conservatory. The rear west elevation has a catslide roof to a full-height projection at the north end, with window openings having plain surrounds and replacement multi-pane timber casement windows to the projection, also abutted by the timber-framed conservatory. The north gable's single-storey accretion has moulded surrounds to its window openings and to a single door opening, also featuring a four-panelled timber door with bolection mouldings and an overlight.

The building was originally a farmhouse shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1831-32. A rear return and outbuilding had been added by the second edition of the map. Griffith's Valuation of 1856-64 lists the occupier as Solomon McKeernan, with the farmhouse and over eight acres leased from the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, valued at £1 and described as a single-storey vernacular dwelling. In the mid-1860s, John Selfridge took over the property, and by 1866 a new house and slated offices valued at £7 had been built. The house remained in the Selfridge family until at least 1930. At the 1901 census, Margaret Selfridge was the postmistress and occupied the eight-room, first-class house with her four adult daughters, two of whom assisted in the post office while a third was a telegraphist. The post office was located next to Aghadowey railway station, which opened on 19 February 1880 and closed on 28 August 1950. The dwelling continues in domestic use.

The setting comprises a mature wooded site to the west of Mullaghinch and Moneybrannon Roads. Access to the property is gained via a gravel drive from the south, opening onto Mullaghinch Road through wrought-iron gates mounted on rendered piers with ball finials. A cast-iron post box stands to the rear, and a wrought-iron pedestrian gate provides access to the front garden. The gates, gate posts, piers and walls are included in the listing.
