Description

This is a two-storey, four-bay building located on the Diamond in Ballycastle, within the Town Parks townland. Likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, the building was substantially rebuilt in the 1990s as part of a redevelopment of the corner site and shares a downpipe with the adjacent unlisted building.

The front elevation, facing the Diamond, features a shopfront with a segmental arch opening containing a large single-pane display window with a fanlight and radiating astragals, the cill close to footwalk level. The window is divided into four arched vertical panes, and a panelled entrance door sits alongside, both beneath a shallow fanlight. Pilasters with Corinthian-style capitals flank the shopfront, supporting a fascia with a cornice and painted lettering. A separate entrance with a fanlight is located to the first floor. Above, four two-over-two sash windows are set within moulded architraves. The wall is smooth rendered and features painted rusticated quoins on one side. A painted frieze runs along the top, beneath a half-round gutter. The building has a natural slated roof with chimney stacks at each end of the ridge, spanning three bays. It aligns with the established terrace building line.

A building is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832, and subsequent revisions from 1856 and 1904. The original first-floor window openings have been retained. A former coach arch, which previously provided gateway access to the rear of the property, has been incorporated into the extended building. The shopfront has been altered since the building’s original construction. The building was formerly used as a house and is now used as offices. It is situated within the Ballycastle Conservation Area and is privately owned.
