Description
Herald’s Restaurant is a four-bay wide, two-storey building dating from the early 19th century, likely rebuilt between 1840 and 1859. It sits within the Town Parks townland of Ballycastle and is located within a conservation area, though it is not itself a listed building. The building has an interesting roof form and includes a gateway. The shopfront was erected in 1996.
The Ann Street elevation features a segmental arch gateway, leading to a wide, symmetrical shopfront. The shopfront includes a recessed central doorway with double doors, flanked by two-pane display windows with a central mullion on each side. Pilasters with painted detailing are present on either side, supporting a fascia with gold leaf lettering and a cornice. Above the gateway is a blank wall. The roof is slated with a single Velux skylight, and the ridge is lower than the main roofline. Three sliding sash windows with four panes each are located above the shopfront, and a continuous corbel course sits beneath a half-round metal gutter. The wall is smooth, rendered and painted, the roof is covered in natural slates, and there are no chimney stacks. A hanging sign is positioned at first floor level over the shopfront.
To the rear is a two-storey return containing a restaurant kitchen on the ground floor and three flats on the first floor, accessible via an external galvanised stairway. A neatly kept rear garden, incorporating a paved terrace for the use of the flat dwellers, begins at first floor level. Access to the rear is through the gateway. The building follows the established terrace building line.
Four years ago, the building was renovated, and the flats were constructed. Historic mapping indicates its presence on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832 and a later map of 1904.
