Description
4 Crocknamac Road, Portrush, is a two storey semi-detached dwelling designed in the Arts and Crafts style and built around 1930. The building occupies a J-shaped plan with a turret rising from the corner. It sits on the south side of Crocknamac Road on the edge of a residential area, set back from the street behind a lawn and hedge, facing towards Metropole Park and Portrush town centre to the north. To the west it is abutted by another building (HB03/10/065A).
The house features a hipped roof of natural Northumberland slate with terracotta ridge tiles and two gables, one of which has timber bargeboards. Eaves display exposed rafters. Red brick chimneys with stepped tops and concrete copings rise from the roofline, and the round bay window is topped with lead sheet. Gutters and rainwater downpipes are generally uPVC except for the round bay which retains cast iron. The walls are primarily painted pebble dash render over a stretcher bond red brick plinth. The gable of the canted bay is half-timbered with hung slate between windows.
The main north elevation is asymmetrical, three windows wide. A gabled projection to the west features a half-timbered gable on timber brackets either side of a full height canted bay window. To the east is a gable dormer with a circular bay window below at ground floor level, topped with a convex metal roof. The entrance is offset in the central section adjacent to the west return, with a diminutive rectangular window to its left and a flat roofed canopy on a timber bracket. Windows throughout are square-headed with brick and terracotta tile cills; current windows are replacement uPVC. The entrance door is three-panelled with a circular leaded light in the upper panel.
The rear south elevation has a projecting wing to the west with a central window to each floor. The west elevation contains four windows vertically aligned to each floor with a garage door at the southern end.
The house was built around 1930 by the Sturrock and Hamilton families, master bakers, and first appears on the Fourth Edition Ordnance Survey map (1922-31). Each of the semi-detached pair came with a motor house, yard and small garden. In 1931, both houses were valued at £35 each. The first recorded occupier was James T Moon, JP and managing director of John Adams & Co bleachworks in Agahdowey, who previously had lived at Ballydevitt House. Moon leased the property from David P Sturrock and subsequently from Joanna Hamilton. Later occupants included Robert Darrah (1940), Mary Montgomery (1943), Francis A Stuart (1944) and Grace B Dickson (1944). The house continues in use as a domestic dwelling.
