Description
A two storey semi-detached corner building completed around 1930 in the Arts and Crafts style, standing at the junction of Hopefield Avenue and Crocknamac Road on the edge of Portrush residential area. The building overlooks open ground towards Metropole Park and Portrush town centre to the north.
The building has a J-shaped plan with a hexagonal conical turret rising from the north corner, topped with a lead finial. The roof is laid in natural Northumberland slate with terracotta ridge tiles. Gables have timber fascias and exposed rafter eaves. Red brick chimneys with stepped tops and concrete copings project from the roof. Gutters and rainwater downpipes are uPVC.
The walls are primarily pebble dashed render over stretcher bond red brick plinth. The gables feature applied half timbering. The bays incorporate slate hanging and lead sheeting between floors. Windows are square-headed with brick and terracotta tile cills. The fenestration is mixed: some original six-paned timber frames with metal casements and top lights featuring leaded, stained and obscure glass; others are two and three-paned metal casements; and some are uPVC replacements, occasionally fitted within original timber frames. The entrance door is three-panelled with a circular leaded light to the upper panel.
The main east elevation features two gabled slightly projecting bays. The southern bay has half timbering to the first floor and a garage door at ground floor. The central bay displays a half-timbered gable on timber brackets either side of a canted bay with slate hanging between windows. The hexagonal turret projects at the north corner, fully glazed to each floor with lead sheeting between. The entrance and a small rectangular window sit north of the canted bay, sheltered by a flat-roofed canopy on a timber bracket. This elevation is six windows wide, comprising double casements, tripartite casements with top lights, and single pane windows. The south elevation is one window wide, both replacements, with half timbering continuing from the front. To the rear west is a walled yard with a plank door. The partially visible rear west elevation has three windows to the southern section and adjoins another property to the north. The north side elevation has casement windows to each floor west of the corner turret.
The building is set back from the street with a surrounding lawn and hedge.
The house was built around 1930 by the Sturrock/Hamilton family, master bakers, and first appears on the Fourth Edition Ordnance Survey map (1922-31). The semi-detached pair, each with a motor house, yard and small garden, entered valuation records in 1931 at £35 each. The first recorded occupier was David Sturrock, master baker of Coleraine, though the lease was held by his daughter Joanna Hamilton who became occupier after her father's death on 23rd September 1938. The original accommodation comprised two reception rooms, six bedrooms, kitchen, scullery, washhouse, bathroom and WC, with a yard containing coalhouses. By 1937 the property was noted as likely to be sold or let for approximately £1500 or rented at £80-85 per year. The house continues in use as a domestic dwelling.
