Description

These outbuildings, dating from approximately 1800 to 1819, form a stable block originally serving a glebe house. They are an example of practical, early 19th century construction with limited architectural detail. The main block is situated to the south-east side of a square stable yard, positioned behind the main house but at a slight distance. It consists of a 7-bay, 1½-story section and a 5-bay, single-story section arranged in a line.

The 7-bay section’s yard-facing elevation has two coach door openings with segmental arches at one end, followed by a square-headed door, three sliding sash windows with six panes, and another square-headed door. The doors are topped with square-headed brick lintels, while the windows have shallow segmental brick arches. Above the final door is a barn door leading to a loft. The walls are constructed of random rubble stone with cut stone used above the coach openings. The roofs are slated and hipped, finished with clay ridge and hip tiles. A half-round gutter runs along the long wall. There are no chimneys. A rainwater pipe discharges into a barrel. The single-story section has three three-centred arch openings designed for carriages, in addition to a single door and window. The walls of this section are of brick and the roof is covered with corrugated iron, which has been painted.

To the southwest side of the yard stands a ruinous two-story stone building, potentially a former coachman's house. At a right angle to this, and on the opposite side of a laneway from the main house, is a small, single-story stone store with a door opening onto the yard and a nine-pane window to the rear. This store features a gable and is covered with slate. At the entrance to the yard from the lane, a pair of wrought iron gates are flanked by stone walls. The wall bordering the lane is built of weathered random rubble stone, incorporating some field stones. While the owner has claimed this wall is a remnant of an older bawn wall from a previous house, no evidence has been found to support this assertion.

The 1½-story section is likely contemporaneous with the rectory and appears on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map for County Londonderry, sheet 30, as does the ruinous two-story building. The single-story section is a later addition and is shown on the 1905 revision of the 1830 Ordnance Survey map. Historical records, the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, describe the outbuildings as "commodious." With the exception of the single-story section, the remaining buildings are currently little used.
