Description

The Moyle District Council Offices, formerly St Mary’s Intermediate School, are a building complex constructed between 1954 and 1957 in Ballycastle, County Antrim. Designed by McLean & Forte, they represent a competent example of 1950s secondary school architecture, adapted for office and leisure centre use.

The building consists of several blocks, with a main L-shaped section fronting onto Mary Street and a central entrance on the northeast façade. To the right of the entrance is a two-storey classroom block now converted into offices, while to the left is a former assembly hall and gymnasium now serving as leisure facilities. A single-storey wing at the rear provides additional leisure space. Two shorter two-storey wings complete the arrangement, providing more office accommodation.

The northeast elevation is the most orderly, and features a wall entrance screen with floor-to-ceiling glazed doors, divided into fifteen panes. The ten-bay office block to the right has a series of windows at ground and first floor levels, some divided into nine panes and others into six, reflecting typical school window arrangements. The former assembly hall has five bays, each with nine large square panes. A glazed staircase is also visible. The other elevations are characterised by a more haphazard arrangement of smaller projecting blocks, appearing less formal.

The building's walls are finished in smooth rendering, reconstructed stone, and concrete brick, with flat roofs and visible eaves. The structural system utilizes a precast concrete grid, akin to the Orlit system, with in-situ concrete joints, precast concrete roofs, and cladding. The northeast façade offers a notable panorama of Ballycastle Bay, an island, a headland, and distant views of the Scottish coastline.

The school became redundant following reorganization of Ballycastle’s secondary schools in the late 1970s and was purchased by the Moyle District Council around the 1980s, resulting in a successful change of use. The building lies within the Town Parks townland and is situated within a conservation area.
