Description

This is a single-arch road bridge, likely dating from the late 1770s, carrying Church Road over the River Bush. The bridge is located on the south side of Armoy, to the west of the Presbyterian church. Constructed from random rubble, it features a humped-back profile and a semicircular arch with roughly dressed stones (voussoirs). Some of the stones on the eastern (upstream) face of the arch have been replaced with dressed sandstone, while the parapets have rough stone coping. Three buttresses are present; two on the eastern face to the right (north) of the arch and one on the western face to the right (south) of the arch. Tie rods have been inserted into the structure.

The bridge is not depicted on Taylor and Skinner's map of 1777, but it appears on John Lendrick’s map of 1780 and subsequent maps. Industrial archaeologist Dr. Fred Hamond believes the bridge is probably from the 18th century. Initially part of the Ballymena-Ballycastle road, it was described as being in good repair in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1835. The subsequent construction of a new road and bridge to the east between 1832 and 1857 diverted traffic, likely contributing to the preservation of the older bridge. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and holds local historical significance.
