Pump at, 3 Drones Road, Armoy, Co Antrim

This is a rare cast iron water pump, dating from between 1900 and 1919, and representing a time before readily available tap water. Situated in the yard of a house near the main road in Armoy, County Antrim, it is in good condition and retains its social significance as a former source of water for the village. The pump is constructed of cow-tailed cast iron, featuring a spirally incised column and a fluted cap with cast rings. The head of the pump bears the name of the installer, A. Clyde of Ballymena. Historical records indicate that around 1947, only two such pumps existed in the village; this pump was frequently used by the community due to the other pump’s unreliability. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest, notable for its style, proportions, and ornamentation, as well as its rarity and local social, cultural, and economic importance.
