Former Mill, Derrychier Road, Derrychier, Dungiven, Co Londonderry

The site contains the remains of an early 19th century corn and tuck mill. The mill race remains in use, driving a contemporary electric turbine. The former L-shaped mill is now ruinous, with much of the walls still standing but overgrown. It is presumed that the former mill wheel was located on the millrace side and may have been external to the building. The mill race, along with remains of a flume, is extant; however, the millrace now runs in a pipe to cross under Derrychier Road to drive the turbine, housed within a small, contemporary hut containing the control gear for the electricity generated. This electricity is used by the owner, whose farmhouse is situated a short distance away on the Glenshane Road. The millrace is complete with sluices and overflows, extending through fields from a weir on the Owenbeg River. An Ordnance Survey map from 1830 indicates a corn and tuck mill, including a mill race, at this location. Ordnance Survey Memoirs from 1833-34 refer to a 13-foot diameter breast-fed water wheel powering a flax mill. The site is of industrial archaeological interest.
