Description

This is a single-storey, three-bay, direct-entry house dating from approximately 1820 to 1839, located on Laragh Lane, near Maghera in County Londonderry. It is a good surviving example of a vernacular building type. The original layout, including the outshot, remains unaltered. The roof retains an early form of construction, featuring rough-hewn timbers secured by timber pegs, and shows remains of original thatch now covered by corrugated iron roofing with concrete parapets, some of which are missing on the south side. Three rendered, corbelled chimney stacks are present, one serving the kitchen hearth and the others positioned above the gables. Remnants of metal guttering are located below the eaves. The front elevation is finished with pebbledash, bordered at either end with slightly raised alternating quoins. The windows are plain, vertically sliding with exposed frames and shaped sash stops; three are positioned to the left (south) of the entrance, and one to the right. Sills are of a traditional depth, and all openings are framed with slightly raised cement surrounds.

The building extends on the north side with a single bay byre, also roofed with corrugated iron and featuring a concrete parapet. A metal gutter runs along this section, and the entrance is protected by corrugated iron. The gable of the byre is of exposed stonework, partially obscured by a lean-to store with roughcast render and a timber-sheeted door. A handle pump is situated in front of the north end of the main house. To the south, an extensive range of buildings is clad entirely in corrugated iron. The house appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1831-32 and 1853 without any outbuildings. The listing includes the house, outbuilding, and pump.
