Description

Gorran Bridge is a later 19th-century masonry road bridge, built between 1860 and 1879, that crosses the Aghadowey River. It is of architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and embellishment, and benefits from a peaceful rural setting.

The bridge consists of three semicircular arches carrying a single-and-a-half lane minor road over the river. It is constructed of squared random rubble masonry laid in courses, with dressing of sandstone. Angled cutwaters are present at each end of the piers, rising to the level of the arch spring, and capped with flat dressed sandstone. Dressed sandstone string courses run along the tops of the abutments, wrapping around the ends, and continue through the arches. The three arches are of equal size and have dressed sandstone voussoirs. The parapets are coped with rusticated and margined sandstone blocks, terminating in projecting piers. Metal bridge name plates are affixed to the upstream parapet at the west end and the downstream parapet at the east end. A wooden stile immediately beyond the west end of the downstream parapet provides access to the riverbank. A house and garden are located just northwest of the bridge, otherwise the bridge is surrounded by fields.

Historical maps from 1832 and 1849-1853 show a ford at this location, with stepping stones depicted downstream on the later map. The bridge is first shown on the 1904 Ordnance Survey map, confirming its later 19th-century construction and indicating it was likely financed by the County Londonderry Grand Jury. The bridge is also of industrial archaeological interest and demonstrates considerable age and authenticity.
