Description

This is a large industrial shed, constructed between 1980 and 1999 on Queen’s Island, Belfast, as part of the Harland and Wolff shipbuilding complex. The building is a late twentieth-century example of industrial architecture, of limited architectural interest, but possessing some industrial archaeological value. It is orientated west north west to east south east; for the purposes of description, the west north west façade is referred to as the west façade. The shed is rectangular and has metal cladding with clear ‘window’ panels incorporated into the walls. The roof is also metal clad, and features a series of ‘northlights.’ A large sliding door is centrally placed on the north façade. Access to the east face was not possible for the writing of this description.

The site's history is linked to the Harland and Wolff shipbuilding company, founded in 1861. Following a period of significant growth, the company undertook a redevelopment programme in the late 1960s, including the construction of large bridge cranes by the German firm Krupp, whose involvement is notable given their wartime munitions production and later return to Belfast for this project. The shed itself was built in the 1980s and functions as a factory.
