Blocking Shop beside Building Dock, Harland And Wolff, Queen's Island, Belfast, BT3 9DU

This is a large, rectangular industrial building, constructed between 1980 and 1999 on Queen’s Island, Belfast, as part of the Harland and Wolff shipyard. The building is orientated northwest to southeast. For the purpose of describing the building, the northwest-facing elevation has been designated the west façade, with the others named accordingly. It is clad in composite metal panels with clear window panels, and features a pitched metal roof and a large, centrally placed sliding door on the west façade. A large lean-to roof extends from the south face. Access was not granted to the east face.

Harland and Wolff was established in 1861 and grew to become a major shipbuilding company, known as “Shipbuilders to the World.” In the late 1960s, the company undertook a redevelopment programme to remain competitive, which included the construction of large bridge cranes, designed and built by the German engineering firm Krupp (who ironically also manufactured munitions during World War II, some of which were aimed at Belfast shipyards). The building has industrial archaeological interest and remains in commercial use as a factory.
