Fabrication Shop beside Building Dock, Harland And Wolff, Queen's Island, Belfast, BT3 9DU

This is a large, rectangular fabrication shop located on Queen's Island in Belfast, built between 1960 and 1979 as part of the Harland and Wolff shipyard. The building, of industrial archaeological interest, is oriented northwest to southeast. The west-facing façade is considered the west façade for descriptive purposes. Constructed in the late 1950s or early 1960s, it is clad in a composite metal material with clear window panels. The roof is also metal-clad and features two north lights. A large, centrally placed sliding door is situated on the south façade. The east face was not accessible for inspection.

Harland and Wolff was established in 1861, growing significantly throughout the 20th century to become a major international shipbuilder. In the late 1960s, the company undertook a redevelopment program to remain competitive, including the construction of large bridge cranes and industrial workshops. The cranes themselves were designed and manufactured by Krupp, a German engineering firm. This fabrication shop is a product of that redevelopment. It currently operates as a factory.
