Description
19 Cladymore Road, Mowhan, County Armagh, is a two-storey, three-bay lobby entry house of early 19th-century date, possibly older. The building is listed as Grade B1 and the extent of listing includes the house, outbuildings, gates and gate piers.
The house faces north-east and is accessed via a stone-built entrance screen and short driveway leading from the road between Clady Milltown and Keady, a short distance west of the former village. The building retains its original thatch beneath a corrugated iron roof covering, which was applied over the thatch during the 1940s. The corrugated iron is secured between concreted skews. A corbelled brick chimneystack with two pots rises right of centre to serve the kitchen fireplace. Rainwater goods are of plastic.
The front elevation is constructed of random rubble stone, including voussoirs over the lower windows and entrance. The south-east (left-hand) gable is slate-hung. The north-west (right-hand) gable is roughly plastered above the roof of an outbuilding. The rear is of roughcast, made up of finer aggregate in the case of the extension. A four-panelled entrance door is set within a projecting gabled porch with a cast iron roof covering and decorative bargeboard surmounted by a moulding. A stone apron occurs in front of the porch.
To the right (north-west) of the porch there is a window at each level; to the left (south-east) there are two similar arrangements. The upper windows are of reduced height and display indications of past alteration. The lower right-hand window may once have been a pair. All windows are vertically sliding sashes divided into two vertically. The boxes are exposed and the sash stops are curved. The lower windows and entrance are set in cement surrounds, which are reduced in width on the first floor. Stone sills occur below and concrete sills above, both of traditional depths.
At the rear, starting from the north-west corner, a ground-floor window similar to those at the front is lit, with a vertically sliding window above displaying a sash of two horizontal panes above a plain sash. Boxes are exposed and there are no sills. The kitchen is lit by a large modern timber-framed window with top-hung openers in the outer sections and a concrete sill of traditional depth. Above is a vertically sliding window with plain sashes, exposed boxes and a narrow sill. The extension, with corrugated iron roof, is lit on the ground floor by a two-light modern timber-framed window with a top-hung opener in the right-hand section. The bathroom has a single modern top-hung window. Beyond the extension there is a single top-hung window at each level.
The internal layout remains as original apart from modifications necessary to provide access to the rear extension. The staircase features a door at the half landing and is of particular interest.
The house and first outbuildings on either side of the farmyard proceeding in a north-westerly direction appear on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1834–35 and also on the 1st revision Ordnance Survey map of 1860.
