Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay vernacular house located on Redbridge Road, Rathfriland, County Down. The house faces east, with its right gable facing Redbridge Road. While retaining much of its original character, the modern corrugated metal roof detracts from its appearance.
The house is constructed with lime-rendered walls over a rubble stone core, featuring advanced eaves. The central bay of the front elevation is narrower than the flanking bays. The front door is a sheeted door with a fixed rectangular transom above it. Ground-floor windows are exposed box sliding sash windows with horns, vertically divided panes, and painted granite sills. Matching windows are present on the first floor. All window and door openings are framed by smooth rendered architraves.
The left (south) gable is adjoined by a single-storey outbuilding; the gable itself is blank. The outbuilding has a pitched natural slate roof and lime-rendered walls, with a sheeted half-door at its front and an attic vent in its gable. The rear (west) wall of the main block has a lean-to return to the right and a tall, boarded-up exposed box-sliding sash window centrally between ground and first floors. A rear return has a mono-pitched natural slate roof and a boarded-up window on its left cheek, and a sheeted timber door (accessed by three steps) is situated on its right cheek. The right (north) gable of the main block is blank.
A small, coursed rubble stone outbuilding is located in the yard to the south.
A building is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834 at this location, although a missing valuation map prevents a full comparison to the present structure. Consistent valuation records, remaining at £5 from the early 1860s onwards, suggest the house reached its current form by the mid-19th century.
