Description
No. 71 Ballynafoy Road in the townland of Ballynaskeagh was a single-storey house built around 1860. The building has since been demolished and replaced with a modern dwelling.
The house was constructed sometime after 1853, as it does not appear on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of that year but is shown on the 1903 edition. It featured harled and whitened walls with natural slate roofing. The entrance was a segmental-arched opening flanked by two windows with full glazing bars. The windows were sash windows, and the double panelled doors included two-frame sidelights with a fanlight divided vertically into two panes. Rendered chimneys rose from each gable, with an additional rendered chimney positioned slightly off centre.
An earlier dwelling occupied the site before the mid-19th-century house was built, visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and located approximately where the current eastern boundary wall of the Bronte Steakhouse now stands.
The property operated as a farm and underwent significant development in the 19th century. In around 1862, Griffith's Valuation records show that William Boggs leased the site from John S. Crawford, a landowner based in Crawfordsburn. By 1871, ownership had passed to John Sands, who constructed two additional outbuildings to the west and north-west of the original house, forming a small three-sided courtyard. Sands operated both a farm and a shop from the site and later converted the dwelling into a public house. Upon his death in 1881, his son James took over the business. The 1901 Census describes the farmhouse as a second-class dwelling with seven rooms, occupied by James (Presbyterian), his wife Mary, and their young family.
Following James Sands' death in 1907, his widow Mary assumed control of the farm and public house. The 1911 Census documents the farm's outbuildings as comprising a stable, cow house, calf house, dairy, piggery, boiling house and barn. Mary Sands retained the property until her death in 1936, when control passed to her two sons, John and James.
The building was listed in 1977. The house was demolished in the late 20th century, around 1990, and replaced with a modern bungalow set in landscaped grounds. The outbuildings to the north of the original dwelling were subsequently converted into the Bronte Steakhouse around 2000.
The property was delisted on 16 September 2016.
