Description
A two-storey, two-bay end-of-terrace house built around 1860, located on Dunbarton Street in Gilford Village. The house forms part of a terrace of seven houses constructed during the town's rapid expansion following the success of the Dunbar McMaster spinning mill.
The building has a rectangular plan with a pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles, a replacement chimney, and replacement extruded aluminium rainwater pipes and cast iron gutters. The roof has been slightly raised. The walls are laid in brick stretcher bond with headers to every sixth course, raised cement pointing, and a cement plinth. The principal elevation faces south-west and is asymmetrically arranged, with the door located to the right and a single window to the left, with two first-floor windows directly above. The windows are 6/6 timber sliding sash windows with horns, painted masonry cills, and 1½-brick flat arches. The replacement door is of no particular interest. The ground floor was previously a shop front until it was reinstated around 1980 to match the other houses in the terrace. The left gable is abutted by an adjoining building, and the right gable is abutted by a diminished-height adjoining end-terrace from Prospect Terrace. The rear elevation is asymmetrically arranged and has been completely refurbished with replacement casement windows. Much of the original detailing and character has been lost due to comprehensive alterations, and no internal historic fabric remains.
The house was originally valued at £8 in Griffith's Valuation of 1864, the highest value in the row due to its three outbuildings. It was designated first class and in medium repair, with an annual rent of £10. By 1901, the house and its neighbour had been converted into a single spirit grocery premises. Edward Smith was the proprietor, operating the business until his death; his widow Mary continued running the spirit grocers through at least 1911, providing employment for a domestic servant. The house remained in the Smith family until at least 1935. A comprehensive refurbishment took place around 1980, converting the building back to a residential dwelling. The terrace is situated on the north side of the arterial route into the village from the north, opposite a gate lodge, with 20th-century housing beyond. A hard landscape yard to the rear adjoins further 20th-century housing.
