Description
A two-storey four-bay end-of-terrace house built around 1860, located on Dunbar Street in Gilford. Originally constructed as two separate dwellings, it was converted into a single house around 1980. The building is now a private residence.
The structure has a rectangular plan form and faces south-west onto the main arterial route through the village. It is built of brick laid to stretcher bond with headers to every sixth course, with a raised cement pointing and cement plinth. The pitched roof is covered in replacement natural slate with clay ridge tiles, a replacement chimney, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods; the roof has been slightly raised. The principal elevation is asymmetrically arranged, with the door positioned right of centre, a single window to the right, two windows to the left on the ground floor, and four windows directly above on the first floor. The ground floor window at the far right was previously a door before alteration. The windows are 6/6 timber sliding sash windows with horns, painted masonry cills, and 1½ brick flat arches. There is a replacement door of no architectural merit. The left gable abuts a lower adjoining building, while the right gable abuts another neighbouring property. The rear elevation has been completely refurbished with modern windows and is of no interest.
The house was built during a period of rapid expansion in Gilford, which followed the opening of the Dunbar McMaster spinning mill in the late 1830s. Although not constructed by Dunbar McMaster & Co, the terrace formed part of the town's growth driven by the success of the linen industry. The terrace does not appear on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map but is recorded in Griffith's Valuation of 1864, indicating a construction date of around 1860. The seven original houses in the terrace were developed by James Hall, who leased the land from local landowner William Uprichard. The terrace first appears on the 1901-2 Ordnance Survey map on the edge of town. Historical records show the two dwellings now comprising this house were inhabited by mill workers and their families throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with tenants including John Orr (1864), Samuel Baird (1866), the Beattie family (from 1907), and William Holmes (1900).
Much of the building's original detailing and character has been lost through comprehensive alteration. The general appearance and proportions of the principal elevation have been retained, but no internal historic fabric remains, and the rear elevation has been entirely rebuilt. Although of some local significance on the main street of Gilford, the architectural interest of the building has been severely compromised by these alterations.
