Description
7 Bannview Terrace is a two-storey four-bay end-of-terrace house located on Dunbar Street northwest of the centre of Gilford. The current building dates from c1980, rebuilt by the Housing Executive as part of a terrace of four houses that replicate a former terrace of eight houses constructed c1865.
The original terrace was built between 1864 and 1868, emerging from the period of rapid growth that followed the opening of the Dunbar McMaster spinning mill in the late 1830s. Gilford's population more than quadrupled between 1841 and 1851, from 643 to 2,814 inhabitants. Though not constructed by Dunbar McMaster & Co themselves, these houses formed part of the town's expansion driven by the success of the linen industry and were frequently inhabited by mill workers. The original terrace first appeared on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1901–2. It was built progressively from north to south, with the earliest houses dating from c1865 and the last completed by 1868.
The original dwellings were valued at £4 10 shillings each in Griffith's Valuation, except for one house over a gateway which was valued at £2 5 shillings as it was smaller. By 1866, the two earliest houses were occupied by James Cunningham and James Stewart. Later tenants included Anne Storey from 1867 and Alexander McKeown from 1882 onwards. At the 1901 census, residents included James Thompson, a yarn bundler, and Thomas Cunningham, a flax rougher. The census records reveal that Thompson's six children and Cunningham's children all worked at the mill in various capacities including spinner and flax sorter. Cunningham's wife was notably employed outside the home as a mill spinner. By 1911, tenants included Joseph Boyce, a tow sorter, and Richard Brown, a general labourer. Various tenant changes occurred through to 1935, when the original terrace was subsequently demolished and rebuilt c1980.
