Description

Harrymount House was a well-proportioned, two-story, five-bay house built in the Georgian style, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. The house, situated on the Dromore Road in Waringstown, Craigavon, Co. Down, was demolished around 2006 as part of renovation works.

The building was first documented in March 1979 as having a slate roof with gabled ends and gable chimneys. It had five windows on the front elevation, with double-hung, Georgian-glazed windows on the ground floor, four windows flanking a central door. The windows were framed by smooth rendered architraves. The walls were rendered with a curious vertical white and natural banding. A return wing, possibly a servants' wing, was thought to be part of an earlier structure on the site, which was first recorded in 1709.

The house was once the home of the Rev. Henry Jenny, rector of Donacloney and Seagoe. It was initially listed on August 26, 1981, and in 1984 grant applications were made for repairs to the chimneys, roof, and guttering, alongside replacement windows and repointing work. The planned work included providing a modern kitchen and bathroom. A Listed Building Consent scheme was approved in March 1985. Later alterations, in June 1992, included rebuilding the chimneys in dark brown clay bricks and installing uPVC rainwater goods. Repointing work was described as crude, and some windows had been replaced with uPVC top-hung versions to the front and rear. The front door and sidelights were replaced with hardwood and varnished. This prompted the Historic Buildings Branch to request enforcement action concerning the windows, rainwater goods, and chimneys, but this was not pursued. The building was regularly monitored, but no enforcement action was taken.

In 2004, a new owner engaged with the Department with the intention of restoring the house. While the Historic Buildings Unit initially objected, planning approval was granted in August 2006. Subsequently, in January 2007, the Historic Buildings Unit was informed of its demolition. The Department brought a prosecution against the owner and builder in November 2007 for the unauthorized demolition of the listed building. Both parties pleaded guilty and were initially fined, although these fines were later reduced on appeal. The building was delisted on November 24, 2010.
