Description

This is a single-storey terrace of three gabled houses, likely dating from around 1820. The terrace is situated on the southwest side of Kilmood Church Road, within the small hamlet of Kilmood. The front facade of each house features a central timber-sheeted door flanked by sash windows. The front facade of the central house (No. 14) is largely hidden by plant growth. No. 12, at the southeast end of the terrace, has horizontal astragals to its front windows. The front facade is finished with plain render and painted. The gable ends are blank and mostly obscured by vegetation. The rear of the terrace is inaccessible and heavily obscured. No. 16 has a lean-to extension with a felted roof, primarily composed of glazed panels. The roofs are gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates, some of which are loose. Three chimney stacks are present, with the render peeling away to reveal brick construction. Remnants of cast iron rainwater goods are also visible.

The terrace appears to have been abandoned for some time, and the houses are in poor condition, although they are potentially salvageable. These houses are shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60, reinforcing their early nineteenth-century origin. They were likely built as estate workers' dwellings by the Gordon family of nearby Florida Manor, possibly around the same time as the construction of Kilmood Church, courthouse, and schoolhouse (c. 1820). Historical records, including valuation surveys from around 1835 and 1861, confirm that the terrace belonged to Robert Gordon of Florida Manor and was leased to James Stevenson, Robert Knox, and Robert McKee. The terrace is now owned by the Church of Ireland and is scheduled for demolition. The buildings exhibit vernacular characteristics.
