Description

This is a small, derelict, single-story farmhouse, traditionally associated with Betsy Gray, a young woman reportedly murdered during the 1798 Rising. The building is located on the north side of a country lane, southwest of the Upper Gransha Road, south of Six Road Ends, near Newtownards, County Down. Constructed of rubble, the farmhouse is heavily overgrown and largely collapsed, though the front (south) facade retains some features. This facade has two door openings and a window to the left, where a fragment of a Georgian paned sash window frame remains. Smaller window openings are visible on the rear facade, along with a small projection. The roof is gabled and now covered with corrugated iron.

The building is thought to date from approximately 1820 to 1839. It is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858-60 and was listed in the valuation records of around 1835, when it was occupied by a Widow Warnock and valued at £3-16-11 along with the surrounding land. The building appears to have been derelict for some time and was recently used as an animal shelter. The association with Betsy Gray, a figure of local legend whose life and death are intertwined with the events of the 1798 Rising, is based on a later novel and lacks firm historical verification.
