Description

St. Mary's Church of Ireland Parish Hall, Kilmood

Single-storey former school house built around 1821–22, now serving as a parish hall. The building exhibits gothic architectural details characteristic of the early nineteenth century and forms part of an important group of gothic buildings in the Kilmood area.

The school was originally established by the Erasmus Smith foundation with the assistance of local landlords David Gordon and the Marquis of Londonderry. According to valuation records from around 1835, the building contained both a schoolroom and a teacher's dwelling. The 1837 Ordnance Survey Memoirs recorded that 45 pupils were taught there by James Lamont, with catechism instruction provided by the local minister. The building was converted to a parish hall in 1972, at which point some original detailing may have been removed.

The front (east) facade features a gabled bay set slightly left of centre, containing double timber-sheeted doors surmounted by a pointed arch fanlight with fine gothic tracery. Above the gable apex (which cuts through the main roof line) is a small roundel, which may once have held a bracket for a lamp. To the left of the bay are two pointed arch windows with sash frames and fine tracery matching the fanlight design. To the right are two similar windows, with a similar but blocked opening at the far right. The render has been removed from the front facade, revealing rubble construction with sandstone quoins and brick dressings to the pointed arches.

The short south facade is blank and finished in roughcast. The north facade, also roughcast and painted, has a window with a modern frame to the left, and merges with a small single-storey gabled toilet projection. This projection has a sash window with Georgian panes on its north facade and a six-pane window and sheeted timber door on its south facade. The rear facade of the main building has two windows matching those on the front, finished in roughcast and painted. The small rear projection has lost most of its render, revealing rubble construction.

The main roof is hipped with a substantial overhang and boxed-in eaves. A small cast iron skylight is present to the rear. Chimney stacks have been removed. Metal rainwater goods are in place. The building is fronted by a low rendered wall with simple wrought iron railings and gate. A concrete brick gate post has been built against the left side of the north facade.

The listing extends to the church hall, gate, gate piers, walling, and railing.
