Description

A cast iron drinking water fountain was installed around 1920 to serve a small development of timber holiday chalets at Andrew's Shorefield, Groomsport. This area was once a popular seaside resort, with numerous chalet and caravan developments, although these are now being replaced by permanent housing. The survival of fountains in their original setting is quite rare, and this example is valued for being a good representation of the type, serving in original condition.

The fountain is situated to the south-east of the green at Andrew's Shorefield and is constructed entirely of cast iron. It features a fluted column topped with a cap and acorn finial. A plain spout and a tap are present on the left-hand side when viewed from the road. There is no bucket bracket at the base, and no evidence suggests one was ever fitted. Inscribed in raised letters near the top of the column are the words “GLENFIELD & KENNEDY LD KILMARNOCK," while the plinth is inscribed with just "GLENFIELD."

The stretch of coast to the east of Groomsport began developing as a resort area in the late 1920s, with numerous static caravans and small structures. Caravan parks and chalets at Andrew's Shorefield appear on the 1939 Ordnance Survey map, indicating the fountain was likely constructed around the same time. The fountain was cast by Glenfield & Kennedy Ltd. of Kilmarnock, a company founded by Thomas Kennedy, who had a background in water meter design and manufacturing. The company's history involved the merger of two businesses, initially formed to produce water meters and castings, eventually becoming a large-scale valve and hydraulic engineering enterprise.
