Description

This is a substantially altered, single-storey house situated on the south side of Drumhirk Way, approximately two miles north of Newtownards. The house appears to have been constructed between 1820 and 1839 and was likely originally a schoolhouse, as indicated by its presence labelled as such on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858-60, and referenced in Ordnance Survey Memoirs and valuation records from around 1835-1863. These records suggest it was one of the schools established by the Kildare Street Society and included a schoolmaster’s dwelling.

The house has been significantly extended with large, flat-roofed additions to both the front and rear, and features PVC windows throughout. The original northern facade has a central, large, glazed, flat-roofed porch that covers the original elliptical arch-headed doorway. To the right of the porch is a window with a PVC frame, and to the left is a projecting gabled section with a PVC window to the gable. A flat-roofed extension has been added to the east face of this projection, with a PVC door on its north face and two PVC windows to the east. The main east gable has three PVC windows on the ground floor and two small attic windows. A large, flat-roofed extension with modern windows is located to the rear left of the main house. The rear of the main house has a PVC door flanked by two PVC windows. The west gable has two PVC windows. The exterior is finished in rough cast, and the main roof is gabled, covered in Bangor blue slates, with two rendered chimney stacks rising from each main gable. The rainwater goods are of PVC.
