Description
The ruins of Little Clandeboye, a former large house, have been demolished. The First Survey records that while timberwork has disappeared, substantial walls and architectural detail remained at the time of inspection. The main building was originally two storeys with a basement, and had single-storey extensions to the north and south. The east-facing main block comprised three bays, with the central bay recessed and featuring a parapet and upturned frieze. It had two first-floor window openings, a bevel surround, and a label moulding continued as a string course. A porch screen in front incorporated three pointed arches, the centre arch wider, flanked by two Gothic pilasters and supported by three columnar archivolts; the arch haunches had trefoil infill panels. A first-floor string course and crenellated parapet were also present. Panelled pilaster buttresses finished with triangular pinnacles. The main wall behind the screen had a central doorway with a flat, painted arch head on triple columns and a triple archivolt. The door opening had a decorative, panelled architrave. Windows are located on either side of the doorway, each having a painted arch head and a bevel surround. Six metres wide steps led up to the entrance screen. The walls were generally constructed of whinstone rubble, rendered and lined with sandstone dressings. The east front measured approximately 115 feet, and shared design features with Ballyalton House, suggesting they might be by the same architect. The house appeared on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834. The condition at the time of the 1972 survey was ruinous and abandoned. A partial survey only was conducted.
