Fountain No.1, Andrew’s Shorefield, Balloo Lower, Groomsport, Bangor, Co Down, BT19 6LJ

The building is a cast iron pillar drinking water fountain installed around 1920 to serve a small development of timber holiday chalets. Such developments were once common in seaside resort areas but are gradually being replaced by permanent housing. The fountain is situated to the south-west of the green at Andrew's Shorefield, Groomsport. It is of cast-iron construction throughout, featuring a fluted column and cap with an acorn finial. A plain spout is present, with a tap on the left when viewed from the road. There is no bucket bracket at the base, and no indication that one was ever installed. The top of the column is inscribed in raised letters "GLENFIELD & KENNEDY LD KILMARNOCK" and the plinth is inscribed "GLENFIELD”.

The surrounding area began to develop as a resort area from the late 1920s, with caravan parks and chalets at Andrew's Shorefield first shown on the 1939 Ordnance Survey map. The fountain is presumed to be contemporary with this resort development and was cast by Glenfield & Kennedy Ltd. of Kilmarnock. This company was formed by Thomas Kennedy, who perfected a water meter design in 1852 and later merged with The Glenfield Co. Ltd. to become a large engineering business. The fountain is of interest for its style, proportion, ornamentation, setting, and group value and has local historical interest.
