Site of former Primitive Methodist Church Meeting House Street, Portaferry, Co Down

The site of a former Primitive Methodist church, built in 1830, is located in Portaferry, County Down, situated between the rear of No.36 The Square and the Portaferry Presbyterian Church. The building was demolished in 1978 and the site is now a small car park.

The church was originally built by the Primitive Methodist congregation of Portaferry at a cost of £130. It was described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of approximately 1834 as a plain building, measuring 41 feet 9 inches by 24 feet 6 inches, with a congregation of between 40 and 50 people. The building was a single-cell hall with a pitched gable roof, approximately 45 feet by 25 feet. It had two lancet windows on the west end and four lancet windows on the north end, with damage caused by the insertion of a wagon door. The south side was blank. The exterior walls were of rubble blackstone with brick dressings to the windows. The interior was harled and whitewashed.

The church remained in use until 1868, when the Primitive Methodists re-amalgamated with the Wesleyans. It was subsequently used as a store before its demolition.
