Description

Site of a former large three-storey warehouse on the north-east side of Meeting House Lane, to the east of Portaferry town square. The building was possibly constructed in the late 18th century, though valuation records from around 1835 describe it as a relatively old three-storey store measuring 171 feet in length. It was demolished around 1990.

When surveyed in May 1971, before its demolition, the warehouse was described as a long building with a slated roof and stone rubble rendered walls. It featured blocked, almost square window openings on the second and first floors, with blocked windows, narrow doors and wide doors on the ground floor. The building had a left-hand pulley gable over a sheeted door on all floors, and a right-hand pulley gable that projected above sheeted doors on all floors. The frontage was approximately 180 feet. By the time of survey, the building's condition was poor.

A long building is shown on this site on Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map, described as "William McMullan's rear", which may well be the warehouse that survived until recently. In 1835 the warehouse belonged to a house on its north-west side fronting on to High Street. At that time it belonged to Thomas McKibben, with William Riddel listed as the owner by 1861. By 1861 the building was unoccupied and described by valuers as dilapidated. Despite its poor condition, the warehouse survived for over a century after this date, though it was largely abandoned by the later 1960s before demolition around 1990. Remains of walls survive on the north side, with a car park occupying the southern portion of the site.
